Top 10 Metal Drummer

The longer you are around bands you learn certain truths about drummers - They never have a car large enough to transport their mutant drumset. Drummers always have the best drugs and know where to find the best parties. They always have the hottest girlfriends (I haven't figure out how yet, still working on that one). You also discover that "drummer" is Latin for cop magnet. That being said here's a list of badass metal drummers.

10) Jean Paul Gaster - Clutch

JP isn't as fast or flashy as most of the other names on this list, but he is solid. And like the other members of Clutch, he is a master of underplaying for the good of the song.

9) Paul Bostaph - Testament, Slayer, Forbidden

Paul is a phenomenal player. He's articulate, powerful and fast, all prerequisites for being a metal drummer. Unfortunately being in Testament Paul has become more of a pocket player. I'm not sure how or why but Testament seems to put a leash on badass drummers when they record.

8) Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater

This guy is a freak. He is an actual learned drummer. I always thought a degree in percussion was some shit somebody made up until I heard Mike.

7)Pete Sandoval - Morbid Angel

Pete is the backbone in one of the most influential and experimental death metal bands around.

6) Richard Christy - Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth

Was anybody else shocked to learn the Hee Haw motherfucker from the Howard Stern Show is one of the baddest drummers ever? I was. I still can't believe it.

5) Igor Cavalera - Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy

Igor infuses tribal rhythms into his playing, creating a unique wall of thundering beats.

4) Raymond Herrera - Fear Factory, Brujeria, Arkaea

Raymond proves that man is superior to (drum) machine. His fast, articulate double bass playing is one of integral aspects of Fear Factory's sound.

3) Charlie Benante - Anthrax, S.O.D.

For all of the cartoon wackiness of Anthrax, Charlie proved to be an exceptional drummer and musician, even taking on a large chunk of songwriting duties on latter Anthrax albums.

2) Dave Lomabardo - Slayer, Testament, Grip Inc.

Dave is the most talented of all the Big 4 drummers. He inspired generations of would be drummers to play faster and harder than they ever thought possible.

1) Gene Hoglan - Fear Factory, Testament, Death, Strapping Young Lad

Gene started as a drum tech for Dave Lombardo in Slayer's early days and went on to become one of the most prolific hired guns in the game. Aside from his stint with Testament, everything Gene has done is ridiculous.
