Top 5 Comic Book Writers

A lot has changed in comic books over the last 50+ years. They have gone from being regarded as silly kids things to a (somewhat) respected form of literature. The efforts of many writers have raised the bar of what we expect from a comic. These are my picks for the best of the best.

5) Chris Claremont - Chris took the failing Uncanny X-Men reboot and turned it into a best selling juggernaut. He's responsible for The Dark Phoenix Saga and the Days of Future Past story arcs, two of the best known passages in X-Men lore. Because of him just about everyone on the planet knows of the mutants and their struggles.

4) Frank Miller - While Frank's comic and movie career have been a bit uneven to say the least, when he's on he is on. His Dark Knight Returns helped usher in a new darker adult vision of comics (it was even published before Watchmen). His work on Daredevil is the stuff of legends and Sin City (comic and movie) is fantastic.

3) Warren Ellis
- Running the gamut from superhero books to drug crazed, gun toting psychotic journalists, Warren Ellis body of work is immense and amazing. Dystopian futures, clandestine government agencies, transhumanist themes and a wicked sense of humor are rampantly employed in his work.

2) Garth Ennis - Quite possibly the sickest, darkest humor in mainstream comics belongs to Garth Ennis. Reading his work you find yourself repulsed and laughing like a maniac at the same time. His creator owned Preacher is one of the most revered series in the comic world. He took the Punisher from kind of a badass to a kill-everybody-in-the-room-with-a-fork-because-I-ran-out-of-bullets baddass with Punisher MAX.

1) Stan Lee and Jack Kirby - How could these two titans not be number 1? Lee and Kirby are gods among men. They shaped the Silver Age of comics and brought superheros to the forefront. It speaks volumes that many of their creations are still some of the most respected figures in all of pop culture.

5 Comic Book Fights I Want To See

My own personal "What if.." battle royale.

5) Batman vs Iron Man - The ultimate rich kid brawl. The world's greatest detective matching dollars and gadgets with the industrialist playboy. I think Tony Stark would have the upper hand at first due to superior fire power but in the end I see Bruce as the victor. Given time, he would find the proverbial chink in the armor.

4) The Punisher vs Rorschach - Head to head psychotic vigilantes. Walter and Frank share an adherence to violence as a necessary evil, making for a gory bout. After a long, grotesque battle in which blood and possibly limbs would be lost, I see Frank walking out alive.

3) Spider Jerusalem vs Dwight McCarthy - The anarchist writer against the nihilist photographer. A gritty urbanite fight to the death. Dwight's dark brooding chivalry matched with Spider's unhinged hatred for all humanity. Bullets, blood and a disrupted bowel later, I see Spider standing winner with his filthy assistants.

2) Joker vs Delirium - Crazy is as crazy does. Packing that much insanity into a comic book probably has rules and regulations against it, but damn it I want to see it. While Delirium is not known for fighting prowess, her vast powers as one of the Endless would enable her to turn Mr. J into a potted flower or something along those lines.

 1) Superman vs The Saint of Killers  - The title fight of the century! The Man of Steel in a duel with the Angel of Death. Supes would put up a good fight - shooting eye beams, using super breath, hurling large objects, etc. But in the end the Saint would just get pissed and gun down the red and blue boyscout.

Top 5 Comic Book Badasses

Is there any greater debate in all of geekdom as to who is the best comic book character? Chances are any of these 5 would slap your favorite around like a play toy.

5) The Punisher (Punisher MAX)

While there are literally thousands of more powerful characters in the entire known comic universe, Garth Ennis' vision of Frank Castle is a force to be reckoned with. Quite simply there is no problem Frank can't fix with a bullet or a knife or explosives or a hatchet or a.......

 4) The Hulk

How can you not include the giant, pissed off roided out green guy? He has the ability to pimp slap the entire Marvel Universe. Being that the madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets about the only thing that can stop him is a big ass dose of Thorazine.

3) Doomsday

He killed Superman. 'Nuff said.

2) Lobo

Initially a DC caricature of Wolverine, Lobo is one of the baddest of the bad in any comic universe. He beat down Superman and killed his own race for fun. Don't think the Canadian midget's claws can hang with that.

1) Saint of Killers (Preacher)

This is the be all, end all superbad motherfucker! After his human body died, the anger of his soul was enough to freeze Hell. After being imbued with the powers of the Angel of Death he kills the Devil for insulting him. Later on he guns down God. Can't think of anybody that can top those feats.
